Error on M1 Based Macs

#1
Bug
Hey everybody,
I used this app a few months ago and had Steam running perfectly. Since that time I have upgraded to an M1 MacBook Air and have troubles with installation. When I tried to install a Steam Wrapper and a couple of the games based on steam it says there is no engine available to install port. Any fixes?

Hi!
You probably are using Porting Kit 3 in that situation. You need to download Porting Kit 4 (www.portingkit.com). Porting Kit 3 is not maintained anymore and less and less ports will be visible there.

Also remember that the support of m1 Apple silicon is much less then the Intel Based Macs. The support for it is growing of course with every new update of Mac OS (Rosetta) and with the new Engines we add (we are depenedent on Wine developers for that).

@OllyWobbs, question: is your computer running macOS Big Sur or macOS Monterey?

Yea, I got both Anno 1404 and 1701 kinda working on an M1 Mac. The trick was directing it to a different installation place than the Applications folder.
The games kinda work, but they crash a lot.
Too much to really enjoy. Not much to much, but just to much. About once every 10-15 minutes.

One can only hope that wine stability on the M1 increases. Performance seems acceptable.

check the standard notes of the game:

Important Notes:

- The Venice Expansion only works for the GOG.com version!
- To avoid crashes after longer gameplay, turn off “post effects” and set  texture level to “medium”.
- AMD/ATI cards has some minor graphical glitches in some levels. Patching the game to 3.1 brings back DRM (Tags) issues.
- Multiplayer not tested

Btw, with the hope that wine for M1 macs will improve - hopefully reducing crashes - how does that work? How does porting kit get updated? Does it update the wine packages once they are bottled?

If not, how does one update a bottle or even figure out when new updates are available?

At this moment, PK4 does not update existing ports. That improvement is part of our backlog.

One can update the engine inside a port manually using the Wineskin App that is inside the port. Open it, press Advanced -> Tools -> Change Engine Used, and you will be able to replace the engine of that port for another one. You just need to have that engine previously downloaded, which you can do using the Porting Kit itself (by creating a custom port with it) or by using Wineskin Winery.
