Direct x8.1 error for Command & Conquered Generals

Everytime I try to run C&C Generals I get a Direct x8.1 error and cannot proceed. I can't find any info anywhere on how to get around this.

I'm on an Apple M1 MacBook Pro.

Me three HELP! 

Have tried editing the options.ini and have also deleted dbghelp as recommended. Nothing working

you most likely do something wrong with the ini file, but there is also another workaround:
