Basic things to know using Porting Kit

#1
Exclamation
Hey Guys, here a sticky thread regarding installing and playing game ports. These steps may help out some of the basic issues when doing the game port. So please check this thread to the letter before sending e-mails. This will make my life (lesser emails to answer), your life (quicker an answer if I haven't so much e-mails to answer) and other users (they get quicker an answer too!) much better.

Porting Kit App install:
- Download the latest Porting Kit app from portingkit.com
- When installing make sure that you have moved the Porting App to the "APPS" folder. This is required to have the specific rights to launch the games so it will work proper. this step is IMPORTANT. Things go wrong here already because people use this app on desktop or download folder where it doesn't belong.

Porting Kit configuration:
-
Check this video of instructions and follow it to the letter.
- Accept all permissions like access to document folder and desktop (except for microphone, reject that one, yeah...ask Apple) so the app can work as attended. Rights for the documents folder is required so to write the user folder to there, otherwise games won't launch or cannot save and such. Access to Desktop to write shortcuts which it in the end will delete anyway. Access to Download folder so it it recognize and install setup files automatically when installing a game port. People are asking some times, help I cannot save a game...well that's the result of preventing permissions to documents folder.
- Make sure to turn on the GOG account integration....this will life much easier in PK....PK will in that case will be super easy to use while it will automatically download and install the desired GOG game.

Make sure before installing:
- For Apple Silicon Macs (But also recommended for Intel Macs) that you are on the latest Mac OS version (that's a must, support of Rosetta and games improve with every Mac OS update).
- For Apple Silicon Macs you install/configure RDM for support low resolution (older) games. Or certain older games will not launch or give a Directx error.
- You read the notes! Sometimes you need to do extra things or the info notes that it may not work on Intel based Macs or Apple Silicon Macs or specific Mac OS versions, quite essential if you have the Mac for which the game does not work.
- When the game is greyed out, then the game is in maintenance mode and does not work! I sometimes still get mails about it, while it is is mentioned in the port that it's in maintenance mode.
- When the auto download from GOG account integration in a exceptional case gets stuck or something, download the offline backup setup files from your GOG account library manually. Don't download the GOG galaxy file (blue button) in that case, but make sure that the Offline backup setup files are downloaded into your download folder before installing the port.
- When you have a antivirus or Mac cleaner or other app that controls everything on your Mac, make sure to whitelist Porting Kit and it actions or turn it off when installing a game port. Failing that may result in endless configuring the wrapper. So make sure that this is set correctly. When require help consult the manual of the antivirus/other application how to do this.
- Help it finds a virus in the Wine engine! Don't worry these are false positives, read more about that in the FAQ.

Installing an game/app port:
- Follow the instructions to the letter when there are extra instructions.
- Installation may take sometimes quite a while even in some worst case scenarios cases 30 minutes, so please have patience.
- When the installation gets stuck at the creating prefix part, then something blocks the installation process (Antivirus or likish app? Wine processes like World of tanks or still running wine processes?) in that case go to the top of the screen at the porting Kit menu --> click tools --> "kill all wineskin processes" and check if the process continues within the minute.
- For GOG games, when it suddenly asks something about .net support, then you probably downloaded the GOG galaxy file of the game which is not supported! Make sure to delete the file and download the proper "Offline backup setup files" which are available in your https://GOG.com/account section. Or even more simple, login in your GOG account integration (gog account tab).
- when a port fails somehow, click on at the end of the installation view console logs and sent me the logs using the contact form so I can check out what goes wrong!
- Sometimes a an extraction fails of the engine. In that case (or other weird issues) go to top bar of porting Kit and then "tools" --> "Clear caches" --> select all options and clear the caches and then restart and reconfigure Porting Kit and retry.

Launching the game:
- Some games takes a minute to launch for the first time, so please have patience. In that case it doesn't do anything (it looks like) or you have a black screen for a  little while.
- Also the Steam client may take a minute or 2 nowadays (hope it will be fixed soon) to open the main Steam client window.
- It may also appear that a "pop-up" window for permissions somehow appears behind the game window which needs to be accepted or rejected before the game continues. In that case tab out the game (black window) and accept or reject (when microphone) and tab back so the game loading continues.
- Sometimes a game doesn't launch somehow because of multiple wine processes are already in use. In that case or kill the wine processes by using the top bar --> tools --> "kill all wine processes". and then try again or reboot your Mac and try again.

Hope this helps for the most common issues. If all of this fails. contact us with the contact form or the "report a problem" option in the game port options and include as much info about your issue as possible including screenshots and logs (more --> debug). This will help me a lot to investigate the issue.
